Managed by the Cerna family since 1990, the estate supports approximately 670 families from the local community, offering employment during both the harvest and off-season. The dedicated coffee growers at Hacienda El Cielo are continuously refining their farming practices and infrastructure to produce coffee of exceptional quality.

The History of Nicaraguan Coffee

Coffee was introduced to Nicaragua in the mid-19th century, with the first beans planted along the Pacific coast.

In 1979, Nicaragua endured a devastating civil war that resulted in nearly 40,000 lives lost. The country’s coffee industry suffered further devastation in 1998 when Hurricane Mitch swept through, destroying plantations and vital infrastructure. These catastrophic events triggered a severe coffee crisis that lasted from 1999 to 2003.

During the height of the crisis, many plantation owners ceased paying their workers, leaving families without food or jobs. In desperation, thousands of rural workers gathered along roadsides and public parks, living in dire conditions and demanding food, work, healthcare, and land. After three years of annual marches, the rural workers’ union succeeded in securing small plots of land for over 3,000 coffee-growing families. This historic movement culminated in El Acuerdo de las Tunas, a landmark agreement signed at a school along the Pan American Highway that brought much-needed relief and hope to the coffee community.

Additional Information

Region: Central Nicaragua

Altitude: 1300-1480 meters above sea level

Cultivar: H1/H3, Caturra & Marsella

Process: Washed

Screen Size: 15-20

Cup Profile

Very present citrus scent that characterizes lime and green apples, accompanied by an imposing body reminiscent of cocoa. This coffee also delivers a very nice acidity.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0573/3321/9503/products/nicaragua-santa-celia-green-coffee.jpg?v=1633459003
