Cuba Caracolillo is a bold, rare single-origin Cuban coffee from our Gran Riserva collection, grown high in the Escambray mountains – the Crystal Mountains at the heart of the island. Freshly roasted on demand in our Montréal facility using our signature TAG method, it combines remarkably intense aromas with a smooth texture and the unmistakable presence of dark chocolate. Caracolillo refers to the prized peaberry bean, and it makes for a truly special cup, at home as filter or espresso.
Tasting Notes
Cuba Caracolillo is prized for its rare balance of intensity and smoothness. Very intense aromas open the cup, giving way to a smooth, rounded texture and rich, unmistakable notes of dark chocolate. Bold yet refined, it is a coffee to be savoured slowly.
Origin
Cuba Caracolillo grows in the Escambray mountain range at the heart of Cuba – the Crystal Mountains – in soils rich with mica and quartz. The moderate climate, frequent rains, and mineral-rich earth form an ideal microclimate for coffee, tended by hand in mountainous, forested terrain where the work is demanding. Caracolillo is the peaberry: a small, round bean, shaped like a pea, that makes up less than 2% of the region's harvest – which is exactly what makes this cup so rare.
Roast
Cuba Caracolillo is roasted using our TAG method – Torrefazione Artigianale Granito, our artisanal single-origin roast. Drawing on more than four decades of expertise in green-bean selection, roasting, and cupping, the TAG roast fully caramelises the beans' natural sugars to unlock their richest, most complex flavours, guided by the hand of our Master Roaster. It is also offered in other roast levels – you can explore our roast options to find your preference.
Brewing
For espresso, use about 1 tbsp (8 g) of coffee per 1 oz (30 ml) of fresh water. For filter or drip coffee, use 1 tbsp (8 g) per 8.5 oz (250 ml) of fresh water.
