Kopi Luwak is one of the rarest coffees Terra sources, and one of the most storied in the world. In the forests of the Indonesian archipelago, wild civets feed selectively on the ripest coffee cherries; the beans pass through and are gathered by hand, cleaned, and prepared as green coffee. This lot is Certified Humane, sourced only from free-roaming wild animals rather than caged production.
Cupping Profile
Expect a heavy body with low acidity and a pronounced earthy, foresty character – the signature of wild Indonesian coffee. Beneath it sit notes of dark chocolate and aged wood, with a long, smooth finish. These are indications of the cup's potential; the profile you draw out depends on how you roast it.
Processing
The beans are prepared using the pulped natural method. After collection and washing, the cherries are dried in the sun over several weeks with continuous raking for even drying, and monitored to a target moisture of roughly 11% before hulling. Retaining some fruit through drying builds body and deepens the earthy, low-acid character these beans are known for.
Roast Guidance
Kopi Luwak rewards a slower, more patient approach. A medium roast, taken just past first crack, preserves the body and earthy depth while keeping acidity in check; pushing toward a medium-dark develops the chocolate and woody notes further. Avoid a fast, aggressive roast, which flattens the complexity that makes this coffee worth its rarity.
